Early Years – building the basics

Our two Early years classes have had a wonderful start to the year. Both of our dedicated teachers, Lisa and Nella have ensured that the first weeks were fun filled with establishing routines, schedules, expectations and getting to know each other.

Math has been taught in a really fun matter through playing lots of different games in order to build the students awareness of cardinality, stable order, one to one correspondence and building their general recognition of numerals.

In English students have been working on identifying all the letters of the alphabet. Students have also been listening for phonemes in words (rhyming sounds, putting words together, taking words apart, hearing beginning sounds, and hearing ending sounds). We are now experts at identifying the cover, the author, and illustrator of books. We understand that one way to read a book is to look at the pictures and make up our story from them.

As part of the phonics programme, we have been focusing on environmental sounds. The children have been encouraged to listen and differentiate between sounds. We went on a listening walk which focused on listening skills and recorded what we heard.
