ISW celebrates World Poetry Day

Our Learning Partners in Lower Secondary have been studying poetry in their English classes over the past few weeks. This study culminated with the learners celebrating World Poetry Day by reading their poems aloud to an assembled audience of their classmates.

For this event, Students spent the week prior learning about types of poetry, then practicing writing some of their own. Some poems were written in native languages and translated, which was a great exercise in language choice. The focus was on Passions and they topics ranged from love and friendship, to the environment, to past events in history!

Not all young people are naturally appreciative of poetry, but at ISW we are keen to give learners the opportunity to explore their passions and to develop an awareness of the myriad of poetry that exists in the English language. In doing so our teachers have introduced them to many different styles of poetry, and through this process each learner has found something that has resonated with them, stirred their passion and inspired them to write!
